(Mark)

Q. What does Mark 1:1 say about what subject(s)?

A. That he is about to state the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, at least, to begin the stating of, of the beginning of the gospel.

It is important to understand what the verse is asserting. One way is to compare it to other subjects, especially ones that we might have intruding about what he states that might be different or contradictory.

What he is about to say, is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the
beginning of something in particular, and that is, the beginning "of the gospel (cf. ASV mg," "of the good tidings") of Jesus Christ, in Gk, "τοῦ εὐαγγελίου," tou evangeliou. If someone asked us what is the beginning of the gospel, would we think of the gospel as good tidings, and would we say what Mark is about to say, that the beginning of the good tidings is something about John the Baptist that is according to the Old Testament?

Q. In what way is John the Baptist's ministry news?

A. The world's most privileged people (Ps 147:20) came (Mk 1:5) to the lowest place on earth, the Jordan valley (1:5), to be baptized by the one "among those born of women, there has not arisen greater (Mt 11:11)" The news is he himself talking about "He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie (Jn 1:27)," who is Christ Himself, who comes also "to be baptized by him (Mt 3:13)" and "was baptized by John in the Jordan (Mk 1:9)." Therefore this baptism, "of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Mk 1:4)" cannot easily be rendered 'a baptism demanding repentance in order to get forgiveness of sins.' That would have been the selling of something, not preaching. Preaching, and selling are not the same. The baptism was what John was "preaching" (Mt 3:1). Jesus was baptized, and He did so to, along with John, "fulfill all righteousness (Mt 3:15)." That verse shows that the baptism of Jesus was the culmination of John's baptism, not the exception to it. The fact of the baptism being a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, and Jesus's baptism allowing Himself and John to fulfill all righteousness, puts the repentance and the forgiveness sins on the granting-of-it side, not the demanding-of-it side (Acts 5:31). The preparation that John the Baptist does, succeeds (Mk 1:2): "behold, I [God] send My messenger ahead of You [Jesus Christ], who will prepare your way." John succeeds in preparing the way of the Lord.
